The 2022 Summer Cruising Season Gets Under Way

After spending a few weeks away from the boat following our return from our winter trip to Florida, we headed out again just before Memorial Day weekend to enjoy Block Island before the summer crowds descend. We had some memorable moments!

Portsmouth, RI to Block Island, RI

Note: After abandoning the blog for much too long, I’m going to give it another try. No time like the present to get re-started.

We returned home from our winter cruise to Florida on Friday, April 15. After spending exactly six months on board, we moved ashore and caught up on life at home, plus made a few short Airstream trips to get our land legs back. But sure enough, the itch to get back out on the water soon returned, and we decided that an early season run to Block Island would be fun. We’re not wild about the summer crowds, so we like getting there before the season gets in to full swing.

Spring Cruising in New England – Part 1

A Retrospective

As the summer is winding down, I can’t help but think back over our adventures this past season and remark that our best cruising was during the early spring, when we had cool, crisp refreshing (although not always dry) weather, few crowds, anchorages to ourselves, and generally happy vibe everywhere we went.  This is so different from high-season-mid summer that I really want to share the perspective.

Memorial Day on Block Island

Our first trip was a four-day run to Block Island for Memorial Day weekend.  While weekends on Block Island are a hectic affair during the summer, late May is always a different story.  We left on Saturday May 26 with a mixed forecast, happy to be off the dock and cruising once again.   Continue reading Spring Cruising in New England – Part 1

First East Coast Cruise – Part 4 – Fourth of July in Block Island

After spending a pleasant day and evening in Stonington, we got under way early and headed for Block Island.  It was a gorgeous sunrise in Stonington Harbor: a quintessential start to a summer day, with glassy calm water and a beautiful moored fleet reflecting the early sun. Rock the Block on the 4th of July

We didn’t rock much of anything, but the Block was rock’n on the 4th of July weekend.

We wanted to get settled and enjoy a few peaceful days before the mob showed up, so we motored over on Tuesday and got settled in.  All the town moorings were occupied already (by boats that had been left there the previous week, we later learned, to secure a spot for the 4th.)  Fortunately we were able to snug up on a private club mooring we have access to on the western shore of the harbor, which is very pleasant.  We made it to The Oar several times for some drinks, dinner and beautiful sunsets over the Pond, and enjoyed rambling around the island with the dogs.  It was very relaxing, but by Friday, the pace started to pick up.
